Uncertainty And Adversity – This Too Shall Pass.

Uncertainty and adversity seem to go together like a horse and cart. Sometimes a sudden adversity leads to a period of uncertainty. Following a major upset – losing a job, an accident or serious illness. We survive the event but cannot see a clear path ahead.

At other times, a period of uncertainty leads to real and serious adversity.

In the second half of April 2020 as I write this, we have plenty of both.

Millions who have suddenly lost their incomes either through unemployment or forced closure of their businesses are facing severe adversity.

For millions of others still working or able to operate their businesses there is the uncertainty of what is coming.

Uncertainty -Everyone Is Asking -What Next?

  • When will this end?
  • What will be the new normal?
  • Will I get my job back – or find another?
  • Will I still have customers?

I am more fortunate than most. Working from home, living on a farm in a rural area and with no children in the house, my life has not changed much. I can walk along our gravel road for an hour without seeing anyone and rarely see a vehicle.

It is a nuisance not to be able to visit my bank without standing outside in the snow or rain (probably a greater risk than the virus itself). Not being able to go into a hardware store is inconvenient. Trying to get action by telephone from some customer service help-lines is an exercise in frustration.

But those are all irritants not major calamities.

Earlier this month, Melisa Pearce of Touched By A Horse asked me to talk about some of my experiences with overcoming adversity on a webinar for her students.

Here is the audio of that interview:

Talking about my experiences reminded me that what we are going through now is nothing compared to some of the difficult periods of my life. A reminder too that the uncertainty I felt at times eventually passed.

Life went on, it got better.

This too shall pass.
