Is It Time For The Turnaround?

Turnaround or The Great Reset? Much is being written about The Great Reset planned by the WEF, WHO, and other proponents of a one-world order. Little is being written about a turnaround, the swing of the pendulum reversing.

It’s late Spring in the northern hemisphere. It will officially be summer in 5 days’ time. It doesn’t feel like it. Today’s max is only 20C (68F) We had a week of warmer weather back in April and another when we actually got into the 30s or 80s depending on your scale, at the end of May. So much for global warming.

There is so much negative stuff going on in the world right now that it would be easy to get despondent. I won’t add to your burden by writing about even more.

Instead, I will reflect on why I have faith that mankind will wake up, people will come to their senses and we can hope for a better future for our children and grandchildren if not as much for old boomers like me.

The Pendulum Theory & A Turnaround

I have written about the Pendulum Theory several times over the years since November 2012 when I bought the book “Pendulum” by Roy Williams and Michael Drew.

turnaround

The authors studied 3000 years of history and developed their theory that society swings like a pendulum between a “ME” and a “WE” extreme in 80-year cycles or swings of 40 years from one extreme to the other.

They predicted that 2023 would be the zenith of the (at the time of their writing) current WE phase and that the state of Western society would get worse before it got better. With hindsight, their prediction was uncannily accurate

In September 2012, after reading pre-publication articles about the book, I included this sentence in this post. “I find his theory both frightening and in an odd way re-assuring. Frightening because we are going to have to endure another 10 years of expanding government control, (the nanny state) suppression of individual freedom, political correctness and assaults on free enterprise.”

Reflecting on the last three years, I had good reason to be frightened, but never in my wildest dreams did I believe it would get as bad as it has.

In February 2017, I wrote of my concerns about the love affair with globalization. I questioned whether we had reached a plateau from which we would retreat. We now have the answer to that question, we hadn’t and we didn’t.

Following the election of Donald Trump as the American President, Brexit and saber-rattling by the North Korean despotic leader, I asked the question ” had the pendulum started swinging back?” in this post in April 2017. We now know the pendulum may have paused in its swing, but only temporarily.

The Good News

In that same post in September 2012, I wrote this sentence “So it comes as a great relief to know that this descent into chaos is cyclical and not a linear progression towards the end of civilization as we know it.”

That is one of the reasons why I do have faith that things will get better. Whether you agree with the Pendulum theory or not, history records that the human story is not one of smooth progression. Every era, every society and every generation experiences ups and downs, opportunity, and adversity. Some good periods – for example – the post-WWII period for North America and Western Europe endured longer than others. Some generations experienced the horrors of global conflict, others did not. Some regions are subject to continuing conflict, others are peaceful.

My late father, born at the start of WW1 told me of the desperation of working-class Londoners in the great depression after that war. Of the grim life the next generation was faced with in late 1940s Britain. For my parent’s generation life did get better through the 1950s to the 1980s. For many, but not for them, they became casualties of another conflict.

The Pendulum Swing Has Faltered

Here’s why I believe the swing has faltered, almost as if the pendulum of a neglected old grandfather clock has become trapped in decades of dusty cobwebs.

  • Millions of people now know governments around the world acted undemocratically over the last 3 years
  • There has been huge pushback against the indoctrination of children in schools
  • Trust of politicians, and global organizations has plummeted
  • Moderate and right-wing political parties are gaining support in many countries.
  • The lockdown showed many people that there are alternatives to the rat race of traditional employment
  • There is a growing awareness of the dangers of authoritarian governments using technology to control freedom of speech, freedom of movement, and the flow of uncensored information

Will It Be A Smooth Turnaround?

Violent conflicts over issues like abortion, the indoctrination of children, and the persecution of Dutch farmers are evidence that the turnaround is not starting smoothly and violent acts will probably get worse both in frequency and intensity.

The brutal suppression of dissent and oppression of peaceful citizens by increasingly aggressive government agencies are further evidence that it is not going to be a smooth swing.

Increased levels of propaganda and censorship are being imposed by authoritarian governments and publicized in much of the”old” media in an attempt to stay relevant in a world that has moved on, perpetuating the current swing. As does the cancel culture and stifling of any opinion that contradicts the “woke” agenda.

The difference now is that much of the damage is self-inflicted, born out of a prolonged period of affluence in most of the developed world. Decades when on the one hand, most people earned enough to live reasonably well. But on the other hand, the transition from a producer mentality to a consumer mindset required families to have two incomes to survive at the level to which they aspired. Levels of aspiration are glorified by the media, celebrities, and peers.

Once on the hamster wheel of financing those desires, it’s hard to get off. The family, church, and societal structures have been fractured. Now we are paying the price.

Is There Good News?

The good news, however, is that out of chaos comes rebirth and opportunity. The Phoenix did not rise from a carefully preserved structure, it rose from the ashes. Japan and Korea became world leaders in technology and productivity after much of their infrastructure was destroyed in WWII. Germany followed a similar path to success as did some of the former countries of the USSR.

The seasonality of nature, germination, growth, fruitfulness, decay then the start of a new cycle. Plants and animals survive hurricanes, cyclones, earthquakes, droughts, floods, and other cataclysmic disasters. Humans have survived much more serious conditions than we are now experiencing.

People are pushing back. We are waking up, getting bolder, resisting the pressure.

As my late mother used to say:

This Too Shall Pass

Yes, I do believe the pendulum is at the end of its swing and that it is about to start its return to normality. It will take a few years to get there, but at last it’s going in the right direction.
