The Wikileaks revelations seem to be generating some buzz in the conventional and electronic media. Reading and listening to peoples reactions to the leaks reminds me of how people view their Network Marketing businesses – looking for what’s wrong instead of working with what’s right.
Part of me enjoys seeing governments being put on the spot and held accountable for their actions or lack there of. There is no question
that most governments could benefit from closer scrutiny.
But as a baby boomer and an ex-serviceman, the other part of me sees these leaks as a dangerous act of betrayal, exposing innocent people to harm, giving ammunition to our enemies – all in the name of truth. In years past, divulging state secrets was considered treason, surely this law is still in the statutes. As I recall, treason was one of the last crimes to carry the death penalty in many countries.
Most people reading this and watching the wikileaks saga unfold in the media can only do so because they live in free societies. We have the privilege of trying to change our governments with our votes.
If the seekers of truth really want to go on a crusade and uncover atrocities, start looking at those countries which treat their women so appallingly or those African dictators responsible for tens or hundreds of thousands of deaths and the destruction of their countries’ economies.
But of course it’s not “politically correct” to expose those types of countries and it might be dangerous to do so. That’s why the USA and it’s allies make such convenient and safe targets.
So it’s really a personal choice, having joined a particular business, like being a citizen of a country, do we stand by our principles and support it, or do we take satisfaction from other people exposing things that should be kept secret?
Wishing you success in all your endeavours.
You have a point! I read this article “World opinion cools on WikiLeaks” by Ben Fenton mentioning that “A poll in Maclean’s magazine in Canada found people supporting WikiLeaks by 40 per cent to 35 per cent” I am one of the 40%, like what an Egyptian commentator said, “We already know everything that was said, but publishing it like this gives it more credibility,”
