It’s Movember again.

It seems like just yesterday I was noticing with horror how grey my moustache had become while shaving in the morning. It was 11 months ago, when I was surveying the growth of a month old moustache. All in a good cause to publicise the Movember movement. A good cause which focuses attention and raises money for research into prostate cancer. This year it is also supporting mental health.

For the third year, I will be growing a moustache. Getting through that first week of bristly itchiness, scaring the cats and the dog, even the horses look sideways at me for the first week or two. Trying to ignore the smiles and sniggers from shop assistants, the outright laughter from friends. That’s one of the problems with being a baby boomer, despite very few grey hairs and a good growth on top of my head, if I don’t shave for a day, my face looks like it has just caught a light dusting of snow.

After a couple of weeks, the moustache takes on a life of its own. By then it has achieved a dense enough growth to make up for the absence of colour. It still looks incongruous, like a white strip under a dark mop.

Prostate cancer
Last years effort

Because it’s all in a good cause, I can take the laughter, smirks and sniggers. At least I can still grow a half decent moustache even if it is as pale as weak moonlight, unlike many of the younger generations and 99% of the women that I know!

Please help the cause and my Movember team the “Woodstock Whiskers” by going to the Movember website and making a donation. Every dollar helps. If you are a male, you might just benefit from the work of the movement yourself sometime in the future.

So that’s it for today, a blatant appeal for money.

Wishing you success and may you grow a masterpiece of a moustache if you are a male and be tolerant of your mustachioed mates if you are female.

Well you could have shaved it off on 31 October and started a new one, or change the style. Perhaps even dye it purple or blue or even red on one side and green on the other like ships lights for port and starboard.

I love this! For the first time my husband (also a baby boomer) is joining in and growing a moustache. I can’t say that silver stubble is a look that I’d normally go for and, between you and me, I have serious doubts as to the quality of the end result too.
This morning he has gone to work suited and booted, but really looking as though he’s slept rough all weekend. So far no-one at work has commented and we’re really hoping that they don’t make him shave it off ( it’s not the most broadminded of companies, unfortunately.)
I’m so proud of him for doing this. And to you Peter, and all of the others taking part in Mowvember for this very worthwhile cause.
    You’re all true gents!

Thanks for the comment and kind words Carolyn, I wish your husband well with his, it’s amazing how some of the slow starters catch up in weeks 3 & 4 to become works of luxuriant facial art.
